Certainly the Pearl buyers telling Kino that the Pearl is worthless illustrates the theme of appearance and reality. The Pearl is very valuable but the buyers want it to appear worthless. The buyers appear as independent businessmen and yet they work for one person. KIno appears confident with his hat and pearl but he is very nervous.
