how does steinbeck show kino's awareness and understanding of animals?

Does this question refer to the tracking of Kino's family (hunting) by the sheep trackers?

Much of this happens in the last chapter. Kino uses the caves for shelter and water just like the animals do. Kino is also compared to animals through all kinds of similes and metaphors. I don't have my book here but take a look.
