could the scorpion's bite have been avoided ?

I suppose if Kino had seen the Scorpion sooner he might have got it but these things just happened in that jungle setting. Kino and Juana lived in a hut that was pretty exposed to the jungle. The Scorpion might have been there in all types of circumstances.
