Chapter 3: In the opening, to what is the compare? Why do you suppose the author makes this comparison?

A town is a thing like a colonial animal.

This simile compares the town to an animal..... the town itself is given human characteristics. It breathes, hungers, feels, and moves.... it communicates news and gossip. This connection entwines the town inhabitants, so that although they are separate, they are one.
