How did the 'code' of the streets' hinder Rameck?

The code of the streets required that Rameck stand by his friends.... that he fight for them. It demanded loyalty. Unfortunately, Rameck's friends did not adhere to this code when trouble came around. They wanted him to confess to the old man's murder and take the rap for everyone.
