Why do Darry soda and ponyboy clean up before a rumble?

It makes the rumble seem more special in that they are "preparing for it." The Socs dress better and have more money than the Greasers, so anything they can do to make their appearance stand out will be a surprise to the Socs and will, hopefully, give them more confidence.
