The Outsiders

Why did Hinton call her book "The Outsiders"?

Why did she name her book The Outsiders thinking outside of the greasers being outsiders and socs being inside.

The title refers to people who do not fit into the mainstream of society. In this case the Greasers are seen as lower class and not a part of "respectable" society: they are "outsiders". In a lesser sense Ponyboy and Johnny, being articulate and sensitive, can also be seen as outsiders from their own gang.
