Yes, Ponyboy and Johnny escaped the city and were hiding out in an old, abandoned church. When the church caught on fire, the two boys showed their heroism by saving the lives of the children inside. Johnny died as a result of the injuries he suffered while helping to evacuate the church. Ponyboy and the others were forced to move on.
