Ponyboy learns the importance of not judging individuals by their outward appearances during his time spent hanging out with his fellow Greaser gang members. Johnny teaches Ponyboy to view Dally in a different light and Ponyboy finally realizes that Dally does have a positive side. Ponyboy discovers that Dally is a gallant, selfless individual, who is willing to risk his life and freedom to help out his friends. The Greaser gang also teaches Ponyboy the importance of friendship and loyalty. Unlike the Socs, each Greaser member looks out for each other and is willing to make sacrifices to help their friends when they are in need. Johnny also teaches Pony an important lesson regarding his innocence. By telling Ponyboy to "stay gold," Johnny encourages Ponyboy to have a positive, fresh outlook on life regardless of his situation.
