He tells Pony to "stay gold", an allusion to the Robert Frost poem. He wants Pony to stay true to himself. He wants Pony to not lose his sense of innocence, poetry and truth. He wants Pony to reach his dreams.

I will try not to cry doing this.. johnny tells pinyboy to stay gold it means to stay true to himself and to stay himself some people think because of his hair but its not
