What are the main affects that Dally has when Johnny dies and how do we know why Dally died on purpose

Dally is devastated by Johnny's death and runs off to grieve. He becomes reckless, robs a grocery store, and pulls his own gun when approached by the police. Dally purposely pulled the gun because he knew the police would fire, and thus, end his life.
