The Outsiders

Think about the reasons each of the boys in The Outsiders had for joining a gang. Are these the same reasons that people today join gangs? Can you think of any other reasons?

I think that gangs today have a different dynamic than gangs in the 1950's or even 1960's. THere may be a certain amount of "brotherhood" involved but the motivating factors are money, power and greed. Hinton's "The Outsiders" seemed a kinder gentler look at gang life where honour, brotherhood and rebellion were the motivating factors.
