Why didn't the Socs and Greasers get into a fight over Cherry and Marcia?

Cherry was responsible for avoiding the fight. She told Bob that they'd ride home with them to stop the fight. All things considered, Cherry took a huge chance breaking up the fight, only to get in a car with boys who'd been drinking.
"No!" Cherry cried. "Stop it!" She looked at Bob. "We'll ride home with you. Just wait a minute."
"Why?" Two-Bit demanded. "We ain't scared of them."
Cherry shuddered. "I can't stand fights... I can't stand them..."
