how did johnny die?

Johnny actually dies as a result of his injuries sustained while trying to rescue the children from the fire in the church. Dally goes in after Johnny who is still inside after others are out; a beam falls on him which breaks his back. He also sustains major burns, is taken to the hospital, and dies from the complications of his injuries while at the hospital.
