Johnny doesn't want to die but is resigned to it. He has a clearer understanding of life and what is important. He tells Pony to "stay gold" and keep his innocence. Pony has more trouble with death. His own parents died and now his best friend is dying. Pony wants to tell Johnny everything will be okay but he can't.
