The novel ends the same way it begins with the line

" when i stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house...." why do you think the author does this (what do "dark" and "light" symbolize)?

This is what is known as framing a story. The plot comes full circle from the beginning to the end. The reader is reminded how the protagonist has changed during the narrative. The light represents Pony's new way of seeing the world. Pony has matured and sees hope instead of despair.
