At the start of the novel, Santiago believes that he is in the midst of an unlucky streak. He knows he has the knowledge and skills, luck, however, has evaded him. By the end of the novel, Santiago's outlook changes as a result of his relationship with Manolin. When Santiago reminds the boy they cannot fish together, Manolin replies, "To hell with luck. I'll bring the luck with me."
