Well, I can't write your essay for you but I'll try to address it. Your question doesn't really match the themes of Old Man and the Sea. I suppose we can comment on Santiago's connection to nature. The old man's heart and soul, his livelihood and his reason for living are tied to the sea. Santiago is even a Christ figure of sorts. You can't say this about sport fishing!
