Identify the genre &specify how this work fits its characteristics

I suppose the genre is a parable to tragedy. Santiago's story certainly has Biblical allusions to it. The story is also tragic in that the sharks eat the great Marlin in the end. Certainly the marlin and Santiago have great connection.
