The Old Man and the Sea

How much convincing evidence do you find for regarding the old man as a symbol of man in general?

*Referring to Santiago*

Santiago holds the many simple traits of man. He has, pride, determination, humility, and resilience. Having aged, he lacks the powers he had in his youth. Like many people Santiago wants to feel one last experience of youth. The idea of redemption plays heavy in both Santiago and all of us as well.
