While on land, the story takes place in a small village on Cuba's northern coast, below the Tropic of Cancer and near the capital city of Havana. The fishing at sea takes place in Santiago's boat. He's is fishing for marlin just north of Cuba in the Gulf Stream of the Gulf of Mexico. The story takes place in September in the late 1940's.
