Are his perception concerning Joe DiMaggio realistic?

I think Santiago romanticizes Joe DiMaggio. He elevates him to hero status because Santiago wants to see himself in the same light. Santiago wants to see his fishing in a similar light as baseball: a sense of heroism implied.
