Why doesn’t Odysseus benefit from the protective gift that the god Aeolus gives him?

Aeolus gives Odysseus bag of wind. Odysseus's crew opens the bag when he falls asleep thinking it might be treasure. When the bag is opened winds/storms are unleashed, undoing their 9 days of sailing. Odysseus goes back to ask Aeolus for help but he refuses because he believes the gods have cursed him.
