In this poem, Sidney rails against the social construct of men being the more powerful sex who do not express their emotions. In his times, and as is even now, men were looked down upon for expressing their emotions. Women on the other hand, were expected to do so. Thus, men had to hide their sadness and joy due to the fear of being ostracized, looked down upon and laughed at by society, whereas a woman was expected to lament, cry, shout and laugh. This is still a theme in today's society.
