Why is Millie’s identity as Indian important to her?
When Millie ponders her Indian identity, part of what she wonders is why she is not tempted to assimilate. She does not speak Chippewa or understand certain customs like Patrice. Yet, she still feels a deep connection to her culture/heritage. “She’d hardly known her family and was as assimilated as an Indian could be. And people hardly ever recognized her as an Indian. So why did she firmly see herself as an Indian? Why did she value this?” (367) Even as she gets her degree and lives away from the reservation, she refuses assimilation, much like Roderick. This is another way in which Indigenous cultures survive.
