What is Nickel Boys novel is about

The story takes place during the Civil Rights movement, as one wrong choice leads Elwood, a young boy to be convicted when he is caught. He is then sent to Nickel Academy, where he is supposed to be trained to become “honorable and honest men”. This quickly turns out to not be the truth, as most of the people that are there are being mistreated and severely abused.
