The Nice Guys Imagery

The Nice Guys Imagery

Misty Mountains

We see a young boy looking at a centerfold spread in a nudie magazine. All of a sudden a car flies through his home and the victim is the very same model he was looking at, Misty Mountains. The imagery tells us that this story is one that couldn't be written as what's in print comes to life quicker than the imagination can create it, but the ending is far more deathly than expected.

Massacre

March and Healy head to up the elevator of the airport hotel in order to find Amelia. As soon as they step out of it, though, they see a man dying of a slit throat and there's gunfire and men being thrown from the balcony. They step back inside of the elevator and leave. The imagery reveals the characters in a very violent reality: they do not step into danger...even when it's the right thing to do. And it adds to the comedy of the film and further reveals their characters through their actions.

Bending the rules

March is attempting to break into a home in order to get evidence. He carefully wraps his hand so that he can punch through the window, which he does. But he also deeply cuts his wrist on the glass and has to get an ambulance to save him. The imagery shows that March is a less than competent private investigator, and coupled with the fact that Ryan Gosling - the dreamy star - is playing him, it lends itself to further enhance the comedic effect of the scene.

Getting rid of the body

Healy and March try to get rid of Sid Shattuck's corpse by rolling it over the fence. The next shot cuts to Shattuck's body falling squarely on the table of a family having an outdoor celebration dinner. The imagery creates comedy as the silent and sure methods of the dynamic duo are seen on one side of the fence, and the results of their dumping being completely the opposite of their expectations.
