The Necklace

what does mathilde spend so much of her time fantasizing about in the beginning of the story? Why do you think de Maupassan describes these thoughts so thoroughly as a part of introducing Mathildes Character?

Mathilde fantasizes about being rich and living a life of affluence and privilege. This is a motif throughout the story. It serves as the subtext for everything that happens including after she loses the necklace.
