If the story hadn't ended with a twist, how do you think it would have ended? Could it have ended in any other way and been as effective (and short) a story?

It could have ended with Mme. Loisel simply paying back the necklace. She still would have gained the benefits of living in reality and accepting life for what it is. I don't think the major theme would have changed.
