Does the author want us to sympathize with madame loisel in the beginning of the story where she is unhappy with life ?why or why not?

I think the author's view of Madame Loisel is rather unsympathetic at the beginning of the story. She desires the things and life that she does not have. Madame Loisel is presented as uptight and obsessed with riches and the illusion of happiness that money and social stature brings.
