explain the difference between gogol and Moushumi in life?

When they meet as adults, Gogol is somewhat far removed from his Bengali background, while Moushumi is tied to that background. She has already been abandoned by one man she was supposed to marry; he is attracted to her and does marry her, but the marriage does not work because they both bring their "background" to the marriage, and they cannot escape the way they have been raised.
