Mrs. Ackroyd’s daughter, Flora, is described as a young, fair-skinner, beautiful girl, who finds it difficult living her life while her uncle manages the purse strings. Note, she doesn't resent her uncle..... she resents her circumstances. Flora wants to take care of her own finances and spend money as she pleases, and it's for this reason that she agrees to marry Ralph..... not because she loves him, but because she desires financial freedom..... something Ralph can afford her. Unfortunately, Ralph's weakness.... like Flora's, is money.
