Why was Ranford on the Island and what was the name of the island?

Rainsford's yacht was passing by the ominous island called Ship-Trap Island. The author gets Rainsford there by having him drop his pipe into the water. When Rainsford lurches to grab his pipe, he falls overboard. He is forced to swim to the nearest island, which is Ship-Trap Island.
