No Problems. Rainford takes awhile to clue into exactly how Zaroff gets his kicks hunting. It isn't until long after the reader has clued in that Rainsford gets it.Rainsford is horrified and calls it "murder." I'm not sure there is a specific literary technique here. Rainsford is certainly creeped out.

Here is a quote when Rainsford finally clues in,

"I can't believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke...Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder."

During Zaroffs speech about the thrill of hunting humans, Rainsford believes he is alluding to animals until he clues in.
