Was Ivan's behavior towards Rainsford disarming?

Rainsford was disarmed by Ivan's lack of response or conversation. When they first meet, Ivan is formal, miltaristic.... completely subservient to Zaroff, who seemed more of a master than employer. Ivan seems to lack a mind of his own.... he simply follows orders.
