How does Zaroff stock his island with "game"?

After he tires of importing animals, Zaroff sets up some fake lights on the channel. These lights draw ships closer, until they hit the "giant rocks with razor edges [that] crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws." Then Zaroff simply takes the crew as prisoners and hunts them for endless fun!
