Rainsford survived his cliff jump into the ocean. We already knew Rainsford was a strong swimmer so it was plausible that he could swim around the island to Zaroff's mansion. Rainsford, being the alpha male protagonist, wants to settle his score with Zaroff. He meets Zaroff in Zaroff's bedroom and they fight. Zaroff ends up losing and falling into his dogs that eat him. Rainsford sleeps in Zaroff's comfortable bed.
