Suitable for a 13 year old Chinese girl, who speaks English as a second language?

I have a request from a parent who wants me to assist her daughter with an 'intensive reading project that her English teacher in Beijing has set for her. I can't understand why a teacher would want a 13 year old girl to read this book. What do you think? What advice should I give the parent?
