The monkey's paw is a symbol of greed. Even after being cautioned, Mr. White makes a wish for money. He ignores the Sargeant's warning that the wishes come at a cost, and White stops the destruction of the paw and wishes anyway. The desire for money..... greediness...... was more important than the evil thatmight accompany it.
