What type of mood is established in the beginning of the story? What helps determine that sense of feeling?

The mood of the story is one of foreboding. We immediately get a sense that something strange is going to happen, although we're not sure exactly what it is. This feeling is determined by the author's use of setting, and finally, the introduction of the paw itself.
