 Mr. White is overcome by greed. As soon as he buys the monkey's paw, his monetary wishes come true but all that he holds special is destroyed.  For example, Mr. White immediately wishes for 200 pounds to pay off his house. Later that day a well-dressed man informs Mr. White that Herbert, his son, was killed in a machinery accident. Their compensation is 200 pounds.
