The Monkey's Paw

Scene 3 ends with the messenger 1 saying Two Hundred pounds. Why do you think the author chose to end the scene with this line?

I think the line underlines the tragedy that Mr. White did receive his wish but at the cost of his son's life. The paw and his wish rendered Herbert's life worth a mere 200 pounds.

Why might the author have chosen to end Part II by unfolding this event?
