Food represents How Gregor's family views him. Grete feels sorry for him and feeds Gregor his comfort food like milk and bread. When Gregor does not eat this food, he is a bug after all; Grete brings all kinds of food to try to get him to eat. As time goes on even Grete tires of her brother and the food stops coming. Gregor watches as the family's guests stuff themselves and Gregor's resentment deepens. Finally Gregor's father throws an apple at Gregor's back: perhaps the final insult via food. The breakdown of connection can be traced through food.
