Comparison of Gregor and Grete’s Transformations College

The story of The Metamorphosis is a troubling one in that the author, Franz Kafka, left the interpretation of its proceedings open to the reader. Because Kafka did not leave any sort of metaphorical explanation for the short-story, there are many obscure interpretations floating around the literary world for Gregor Samsa’s transformation and other important elements included in the story such as the transformation of Grete Samsa, Gregor’s own sister. Although both transformations involve each person becoming a more repulsive version of themselves, they transform in very different ways and into very different things. Some elements to each of their transformations are more obvious than others like the fact that Gregor woke up and found himself to be a human-sized cockroach or that Grete went from a sweet and supportive sister to one who would ultimately call for her brother’s demise. There are, however, more intricate details involved in both of their transformations that I will elaborate upon in the following paragraphs, organizing and comparing each of the transformations into 3 main parts: their original state, the formation of who they will ultimately become, and how the effects of their transformation influenced the actions...
