“Horrible things were about to happen, but somehow we felt increasingly calm” (69). What meaning does the author convey in this novel about how people handle oppressive governments?

The memory police are portrayed as a oppressive force that are making people lose their memories. Though there are those that are immune to it, our protagonist is not so lucky to be one of them. Instead, she uses typing as a way to express how she feels. She types the story about a woman being trapped and losing her voice. This is a creative outlet for the protagonist to convey her feelings of being trapped in a oppressive system.
