Are you sure you have the correct chapter? Henchard is barely mentioned in Chapter Eight, and his mention particularly speaks to his loneliness. If this question does pertain to Chapter Eight, we can infer that Henchard's position as mayor has left him out of the loop. He is no longer looked uon as a friend, but rather, the mayor. He is a lonely man, but he is also islolated from the townspeople.
