Everything was different. We were faster without our youngest and oldest, but now we were without deep roots, without the acute need to protect and make better.”
-- French (Chapter 18, “On the Road”)

Importance: French is describing the effect that RiRi's death and Minerva's capture has had on the group. While both RiRi and Minerva have slowed them down and sometimes made their lives more difficult, they also provided purpose for the group as a whole. RiRi symbolized the hope for the future and Minerva was the embodiment of the history of their people.
