Although speculation has proposed the notion that Lucy is based on a real life inspiration that has ranged from Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy to his future wife to his daughter, enough information about the figure is provided within the text to create a basic portrait. She is young maiden who lived an unremarkable isolated life near the River Dove in the English midlands. She carries a quiet grace, but might well be seen frolicking with glee. Although blessed with beauty, she didn’t many suitors primarily because of the distance she kept between herself and others. She died young and though her passing went unnoticed and unremarked by many, it forever and profoundly made the world a different place for the one person who seems to have glimpsed all her charms: the poet.
