why do people believe that "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" was the first "truly modern poem."?

Because more than any poem before or since it describes a modern man. In a modern way. This is a guy bored with everything easily overthrowing establishment without trying really. And it was published in the middle of WWi. Which is great.
