In lines 4-9, we learn that the speaker is intelligent, yet jaded. As the speaker moves through the streets, we infer that for all of his intelligence, he also suffers from self-alienation.... the inability to interact with those around him. He feels he needs to pretend to be something he's not.... wear a mask, in order to fit in. Thus, for all of his knowledge and love of the arts, he is also somewhat of a snob.
